9 Home Remedies To Treat A Sore Throat

We are all exposed to a variety of viruses and bacterias each and every day. Whether your children bring germs home from daycare or we do from work (by touching door handles, light switches or even pens and pencils), illness comes to us all, at one time or another. Thankfully, our bodies are designed to fight off these pesky bugs as long as we keep our immune system strong. Unfortunately, there are times when our immune systems may be weak, such as times of high stress at work or home, during a traumatic life event or simply when we have been eating too many acidic, unhealthy foods. These are often the times when those nasty bugs take over our bodies and cause us to get ill. A common illness many of us suffer from is a sore throat. The majority of time a sore throat is caused by a virus which is something you don’t need to see your physician for. Luckily, there are many home remedies you can use to relieve the pain and discomfort as well as heal and eliminate the viral infection.

Home Remedies For a Sore Throat

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has natural antibacterial and anti-microbial properties. It’s also high in beneficial bacteria, mineral enzymes and other nutrients which make it a very inexpensive way to beat that cold. Add 1-2 tbsp to 1/3 cup of warm water and gurgle for a few seconds to coat the throat then swallow. It is a strong taste and if you can’t handle it, try diluting it more until you get used to it.

2. Vitamin C

Unknown-2This vitamin is a great way to boost your immune system to allow it to fight off infections. As soon as you have symptoms or if you’ve been exposed to someone with a cold or sore throat, start eating foods with Vitamin C and/or supplements to be sure you’re getting a high dose. Kiwi, papaya, peppers and broccoli are just a few of the fruits and vegetables that have high vitamin C content. We recently started carrying Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate) at Aim2Walk. We understand the extreme benefits to this powerful fighting vitamin and encourage all our clients to use it whenever they may be exposed to any kind of illness. 3. Oil of Oregano

This powerful antibacterial and antiviral oil is strong and mighty. At the first signs of a cold or sore throat take a shot of water with a few drops of oil. Remember to follow the recommendations on the label as each brand has a different potency.

4. Raw Garlic

Garlic is packed with immune-boosting, anti microbial compounds that help fight off viruses. Eating a few cloves of raw garlic may help fight off the pesky bugs quicker.

5. Lemon

Lemons are rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants and help sooth a sore throat from pain and inflammation. I typically squeeze a slice or two with some warm water and apple cider vinegar. Due to it’s acidic properties, lemons also help break up the mucus that causes a sore throat.

Unknown-46. Licorice Root

Many natural sore throat teas will have licorice root in them. I find they taste good and it helps relieve some of the discomfort in the throat. You can also find a liquid form of the root which can be gargled with some warm water.

7. Salt Water Gargle

This is my ultimate favourite! This blog is actually created because I’m currently battling a very sore throat. For the first day of my symptoms, I completely forgot about gargling salt water. Finally the second day I started and felt instant relief! With 1/3 cup of warm water and 1 tsp of salt, take a few small sips and gargle for a few seconds each. I find it best to do after my meals so the salt water stays in my mouth to help heal the affected areas.

8. Raw Honey

Raw honey has antiviral and antibacterial properties as well as immune boosting properties. I try only to eat the unpasteurized raw honey to be sure it’s the purest form to be the most affective. Just 1 tsp in warm water will do.

9. Whiskey

Unknown-3I have to be honest, I’ve never liked whiskey, however since I was a child, my aunt would recommend a shot of whiskey to help sooth a sore throat and help me sleep and it works!

Although there is no immediate cure for the sore throat, each of these home remedies play a part in the healing process. Be diligent and continue each of these through the entire day! With my experience I have found my throat to be the worst when I wake up in the morning so I begin the routine right away. Gargling and drinking some warm water with apple cider vinegar and a squeezed lemon slice, followed by gargling salt water. Often I immediately start to feel better. Remember to rest and drink clear fluids as much as possible while your body tries to fight off the virus! Good Luck!
