Fashion designer Carrie Hammer has given a beautiful young woman the opportunity of a life time.
Karen Crespo lost all four limbs after contracting a bacterial meningitis two years ago. She wishes that her disability didn’t define her although she finds it a struggle everyday. Earlier this year, Dr. Danielle Sheypuk made history, becoming the first ever wheelchair model while rolling down the runway in Carrie Hammers design. After seeing this, Karen reached out to the designer. She has always had a passion for fashion and she wanted to show that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Many young woman only dream of having the chance to be a part of a fashion show. Although Karen has challenges with her new body image, she wants to show others that although you may have a disability, it doesn’t have to stop you from making your dreams come true.
Karens story does not end here. When Carrie heard that Karens $100,000 prosthetic arms had been stolen, she was determined to get her a new pair. With the help of the prosthetic company, she was given a new set of functional arms.
“I never thought in a million years I would be at New York Fashion Week, even as a spectator,” she added. “And now I’m going to be a fashion role model. It’s such a big deal for me.”
