In September 2012, Jessie (Gisella) Halkias, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After 5 rounds of chemo, radiation and countless medical ups and downs, her brain tumor is gone. Although Jessie and her husband, Tom, are extremely grateful for her recovery, her current health status has left her with physical and financial difficulties.
After Jessie’s fifth round of chemo, she experienced extreme complications which left her paraplegic and unable to walk. Jessie depends on Tom to provide financially for her and their 2 teenage girls, as well as take care of her with all her medical needs. Due to her weakness and because they do not live in a wheelchair accessible home, Tom must be there to help her transfer from her chair to bed and help her with activities of daily life.
For the past 10 months, Jessie has been coming to Aim2Walk for intensive neurological therapy twice a week. Her strength has increased and she is seeing positive changes in her function. She was experiencing extreme pain when she first came to the clinic, however, she is able to find some relief with the movement on the Lokomat (a robotic assisted walking treadmill) and strength training as well as through acupuncture and massage.
Jessie’s cousins Domenic and Grace Commisso have been so kind to host a fundraiser to help support Jessie and her family. The “Help To Walk” event will help raise money for Jessie to continue with her therapy so she can achieve her goals of walking again. The event is a sit down dinner, dance and an open bar.
