Mix & Mingle & Massage

For the 2nd straight year, Aim2Walk was represented at the annual Brain Injury Society of Toronto (BIST) and Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA) Mix and Mingle event held at Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto on June 12, 2013.

JP and Michelle were a major highlight for those lucky enough to experience a massage from one of our amazing Massage Therapists. The pair worked on tight muscles and trigger points non-stop throughout the event, but were still able to enjoy the great city view, delicious food, and after the massage booth closed, a beverage or two.

The 500 people in attendance raised a tonne of money for BIST and OBIA (totals not known at time of publication) and people went home with great items from the silent auction.

June is AWARENESS MONTH

brainjuneJune is here and with it comes Brain Injury Awareness Month! We had a recent post on Parkinson’s Awareness Month in April. You are not alone if you feel bombarded with _____ Awareness Month every time you have to turn the page on the calendar.  It’s nearly impossible to keep track of what we are supposed to be aware of in a given month…but that’s not the point. With only 12 months at our disposal, we are forced to fit the hundreds of conditions and injuries somewhere within our calendar.

In June alone, we have:

ALS Awareness Month:  ALS Society of Canada

Brain Injury Awareness Month: Brain Injury Association of Canada

Deaf-Blind Awareness Month: Canadian Helen Keller Centre

International Men’s Health Month: International Men’s Health Month

National Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: National Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Canada

Stroke Awareness Month: Heart & Stroke Foundation

Recreation and Parks Month: Ontario

Seniors’ Month: Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat

The idea, of course, is to raise awareness and/or give recognition to these issues that may otherwise not make it into mainstream media. So even if you don’t have experience with something like, say, Zombies, May is Zombie Awareness Month in the United States. Sound like a joke? Even the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized Zombie Awareness Month in October 2012. Head to their website for more info on Zombie Preparedness.

But if conditions of the living are more your interest, you can check out a calendar for Canada’s Health Promotion Days here.  You can sort through health promotion days, weeks, or months.

Happy Awareness Month!
